WCJC BASEBALL TEAM COMPETES IN REGIONAL TOURNAMENT
Pioneers lose to San Jacinto, will play winner of Alvin/Galveston game on Tuesday
The Wharton County Junior College Pioneers baseball team lost a heartbreaker to San Jacinto Monday night in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Region XIV Tournament.
The Pioneers and Gators were tied at one run each through the majority of the game before San Jacinto scored a run in the top of the 9th inning to achieve a 2-1 victory. The game was played at Concordia University in Austin.
“Both teams had chances to score and the pitchers and defense stepped it up to stop them,” said WCJC baseball coach Keith Case late Monday night. “Our players really competed tonight and laid it all out there. It was a good ball game.”
The Pioneers beat Angelina College in a first-round game and Navarro College in a second round match-up before facing San Jacinto. Despite the loss, WCJC is not yet out of the tournament. The Pioneers will play at 2 p.m. Tuesday against the winner of the Alvin College and Galveston College game, which is scheduled for earlier that morning.
If the Pioneers lose that game, they will be out of the tournament. If they win, they will face San Jacinto for a second time in the championship game at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
The winner of the regional tournament advances to the NJCAA World Series, scheduled for May 27 to June 4 in Grand Junction, Colo.
“We’ve still got a chance,” Case said, referring to making the World Series. “We just need to go out there and compete.”
The match-ups are being broadcast by the Texas Sports Radio Network. To watch the games or get the latest updates, check out the TSRN website: www.tsrnsports.com
