‘CRITTERS AND SUCH’
WCJC Jazz Band concert highlights the animal world
Wharton County Junior College Jazz Band member Miranda Machicek of Louise rehearses for the upcoming “Critters and Such” concert, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the Horton Foote Theatre in the Duson-Hansen Fine Arts Building on the Wharton campus. The event is open to the public and free of admission.
The Wharton County Junior College Jazz Band will present its more animalistic side at the upcoming “Critters and Such” concert.
Scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3 at the Horton Foote Theatre on the Wharton campus, the concert will feature pieces that have some type of connection with the animal world. In some cases, the song title will refer to a particular creature. In other instances, the group who made the song popular was named after an animal. And on a few songs, the music itself will be an expression of a particular animal’s movements or characteristics.
WCJC Band Director Joe Waldrop said this is one show not to be missed.
“This concert will be quite unique in its theme and presentation,” Waldrop said. “I love the way the music follows the movements of a respective animal and I believe the audience will have a lot of fun in the process.”
The band this year has four returning performers with plenty of “fresh faces,” Waldrop said. The jazz band is a more select group comprised of members of the college’s Concert Band.
Waldrop said the “Critters and Such” show will include guest performers. The Brazos High School Jazz Band will open the concert with three pieces. The group is under the direction of Rolando Cantu.
“We’re hoping for great attendance at this show,” Waldrop said. “It would be great to have our guest performers take the stage in front of a packed house.”
The WCJC Jazz Band will perform “Critters and Such” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3 at the Horton Foote Theatre in the Duson-Hansen Fine Arts Building on the Wharton campus. The concert is open to the public and free of admission.
